Spatial planning: which heat supply technologies for which district?
Heat planning towards a decarbonised future requires a spatial approach: availability of heat sources in the city, spatial density of the heat demand and urban development determine the possible solutions to supply heat to buildings. However, calculating which solutions are more cost effective in which districts (e.g. heat pumps vs. district heating) is not an easy task. It requires data about technologies, buildings, energy demand, etc., as well as the definition of the scope of the calculations (for instance taking into account or not the reinforcement of the power grid due to higher power consumption). The goal for cities is to define prospective scenarios and the key parameters to succeed in the implementation of transition pathways.
This session will present the studies done by the City of Rotterdam and the City of Winterthur to determine which heat supply technologies are preferable in which districts. Our speakers will be:
